Tsukinowa Yusen – 月 之 輪 湧泉
1908 – 1998
Kato Goichi (加藤 護) or better known to collectors as Tsukinowa bonsai Yusen lived from 1908 to 1998. He lived in Tagimi-city Gifu prefecture and was a gifted painter having studied in Kyoto.
His profession was that of a painter of ceramics, but unrelated to the bonsai. In 1960-61 he started making ceramics for himslef and as he gained an interest in bonsai began to paint their own pots hand.
Sometime around 1971 to 1974 he lived with Sei-fu Yohei and developed a partnership that would make ceramics Yusen and Sei-fu would PEINT them. Sei-fu not always exposed his signature in pots Yusen but his painting style is different and recognizable.
Yusen usually creates small porcelain pots painted red or blue color mixing. Infrequently he would glaze their pots with yellow frame, but this is quite rare. Before Yusen almost had not painted potted bonsai in Japan.
One of the famous series of pots Yusen is your version of Ando “53 Stations of the Tokaido Road.” Other well-known reasons include the famous anthropomorphic animals, scenes of mountain scenery, water scenes featuring birds, pictorial scenes from the famous poetry and one even bats!
Undoubtedly, pots Yusen occupy the highest in terms of hand-painted pots. They are highly valued in and outside Japan. To own one is a treasure to own more than one is considered a very valuable collection of the best bonsai pots painted by hand in the world.
