summer buds begin to form in the black pine and red decandling few days. Wire tree treatment they need before summer outbreaks seem to avoid damaging them. What do I do when shoots appear small but still want to connect a tree? When I am ambitious, I go ahead and cable carefully. Much more often, I wait until the fall.
Here are some pictures of the newly formed shoots in black and red pines.

Some techniques require thinning outbreaks before they fully develop. I have done this at times, but usually a large number of outbreaks indicate that a branch is too strong and should be removed. In the coming weeks I will continue to control my pines and see if it will be diluted when the buds get a little bigger.
