maybe ten or fifteen years ago

, I met my first exhibition of ikebana. I was surprised how I was intrigued by the screens. Long familiar with flower arrangements, I had no idea how suggestive and beautiful screens could be. Due to a combination of bad timing and ignorance about the scene ikebana, I have seen some samples in the intervening years, and only last month I take my first local exhibition.

The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Ikebana International presented an exhibition of ikebana in the building of the County Fair in Golden Gate Park from March 16 to 17, 2013. It was a great show. While I know little about ikebana beyond the fact that you can include flowers, I know enough to appreciate the effort that in the many beautiful arrangements.

One facet I collected exhibition was that there are a number of different approaches to ikebana organized in different schools. Each array is marked with the creator and the school represented. Among the seven schools represented – Sogetsu, Ikenobo, Wafu, Aratame, Chiko, Enshu and Ohara – most screens seemed to belong to the Sogetsu school. From their website:

modern contemporary life is reflected in the Sogetsu ikebana with emphasis on individual expression. Natural and artificial materials are widely used, often in unexpected ways. Students often make their own containers and pay special attention to the environment in which the work is placed.

Some of the Sogetsu ikebana are presented on display at the exhibition -. I will share photos from other schools Friday
