Decandling a black pine shohin

bonsai general - 33 views

The last of my pines decandled this year are the smallest of the group. Giving these trees less time to recover helps keep growth in check and summer short needles. I removed all but the smallest buds of spring, and then additional needles are removed, leaving about 5 pairs in each branch.

I knew there was a lot of branches of this tree, but had no idea exactly how many. Do you have 160+ surprise? My trusty assistant broke a shot after each cut so I could string together images.

The good news is that not all branches of wire needs – I can not imagine adding 80 cables to the tree! And as the tree is young, I do not know how many branches more than I can wait before I feel the tree is “full”.
