After wanting a redwood Sequoia sempervirens , for many years, now I have one in my collection. As the first order of business is to get healthy, I’ve been eating and drinking heavily this year. Only in the last two months, it is put in a lot of new growth.
It is still too early for wiring or style, but I was able to make some cut while the tree continues to gain strength . I reduced during a recent workshop Bay Island Bonsai. Boon suggested the reduction branches with at least two growing tips, so he did. We also talked about the types of produce growth redwoods. At a glance, it is easy to see that the weak growth last year was stopped and the vigorous growth this year kicked in.
flyers Tiny since last year, followed by stronger growth this year
Looking more closely, you can see redwoods actually produce two types of growth – flat cusps in radial rows or brochures that are great a little more and more widely spaced
radial brochures below, above opposite leaflets
These are the two types of outbreaks by side.
Redwood different outbreaks
more important to know about the different outbreaks What is that brochures distributed radially indicate more vigorous shoots. Below is a photo of a branch showing a vigorous session at the tip of the branch, the strong growth this year on the sides and smaller last year inside the branch leaves shown.
A common technique for the formation of red wood is to cut the leaves in half. As redwood can not produce mid leaf buds, this approach growth pushes behind. This is not recommended for refinement branch best result of this approach is a lot of shoots back that eventually can produce knobs. At worst, weak branches may die if not sprout again.
Note previously cut sheet (yell0w) and new growth emerging from the base of the branch.
put the tree in the bank after minor cuts and see wiring when the tree produces strong growth inside the tree.
